Wall Heater Won’t Light — What to Do

A wall furnace that clicks, won’t ignite, or keeps losing the pilot is usually a repair — not always a full replacement. We diagnose on site and write the estimate before work.

Text a photo of the heater to (916) 450-1268 — we usually reply within 15 minutes. Common causes are a dirty or out pilot, a failed igniter, a thermostat that is not calling for heat, or a gas-valve / safety lockout. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or the gas company first.

Why a wall gas heater won’t light

On LA jobs we most often find:

  • Pilot out, dirty, or the thermocouple / flame sensor is weak
  • Igniter clicks but never fires
  • Thermostat batteries, wiring, or a wall-heater t-stat that is not calling for heat
  • Gas valve or safety lockout after a failed start
  • Blocked burner, dirty internals, or a vent issue that trips the unit

A photo of the grille and the open cabinet (if the cover is already off) helps us prep parts before the visit.

What we do on the visit

  1. Inspect the wall heater, controls, and connections we can reach
  2. Write a repair estimate — or a replacement estimate if the unit is not worth fixing
  3. Do the approved work and test that it lights and heats before we leave

See the full wall gas heater service page for replacement, thermostat swaps, and leak / CO checks.

When it is an emergency

If you smell gas, hear hissing, or a carbon monoxide alarm is on, get everyone out and call 911 or the gas company. Do not keep trying to light the heater. After it is safe, we can do a follow-up leak / CO check — see gas smell or CO at a wall heater.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fix a Williams wall heater that won’t light?

Yes — Williams and other common residential wall furnaces. Text a photo of the grille and rating plate so we can confirm the model.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace?

We tell you after the on-site look. If parts cost more than a new unit, we write a replacement estimate instead. No work until you approve.

Do you guarantee same-day service?

No. Next-day visits are often available — ask when you message us.
